Chair: Sandy
Attendees:
SC, RM, MR, MX, LS, CS, PS, WT, PV plus 3 guests for ‘Taster’ session.
Apologies:
JB, RS
Thanks to Robin for taking the warm up session and to Marcus for taking the lead bringing us in and counting across our practice songs as well as guiding us through the body percussion practice..
- White Winter Hymnal:
- Warm up song, sung through twice, no big issues.
- Need to check with Rob on tempo, breathing and phrasing.
- Java Jive:
- Remembered Rob’s instruction to sing a little slower, more sultry.
- Not too slow though, need to keep pitch up! Better second time through.
- Fum, Fum, Fum:
- Remember from p1 last two bars: ‘Oh a child was born’ crescendo all the way to ‘see the baby oh so holy’ middle p2 then suddenly quiet for ‘in a stable mean and lowly…’
- Not always in synch but agreed should be fine with piano.
- I Got Rhythm (men):
- Piece taken down a tone..
- Making progress on both intro and main part of song.
- Bring Me Little Water (Women):
- Sang through twice as per Louli’s sheet.
- Need to keep up tempo but sounding good.
- Vox Vibe (Women):
- Sang through a few times.
- It’s not straight forward and we need Rob’s input on timing and help across individual parts
- Take Five:
- This must swing: Peter directed us all to the really useful YouTube link on our website, a great example of how it should be sung and swung!
- Marcus suggested counting in3 beats and 2 beats, rather than straight 5 beats, very helpful.
- Timing crucial: need to get it right Bar 26 ‘push note’ (Marcus’ description) so hit the notes at the right moment/correct rhythm.
- Uptown Funk:
- First outing for this upcoming gig though a reprise for some.
- Challenging but we gave it a go, will need lots of practice to get rhythm etc. right.
- Body Percussion for ‘Dance’:
- Improving! Keep at it…
A.O.B.
- Narratives for Winter Gig:
- Robin sent out prior to the meeting some suggested narratives as witty intros to some of the songs
- Robin asked for feedback: there was no consensus on whether tor not to incorporate these and/or other narratives into the gig, with points made both for and against doing so.
- To help us reach a decision, it was agreed to include time at our next rehearsal to run through the narratives. This will be an opportunity to bring characterization and life to the individual narratives and thus a sense of how they might work in the gig.
