So, the idea here is that there’s a percussive intro of 48 bars to get us onto the stage (either start of first or second half). Then once we’re on stage (or at least in position, if we don’t use the stage), then we start the actual song.
The intro has 8 parts, and they come in sequentially. The basses sing all 48 bars, the baritones 40 bars, the tenors 32 and so on. The sop 1 part comes in last and does least singing on the intro. Trust me, you’ll be glad of that – it’s quite high!
In the actual song, there’s only 4 voices – SATB. It’s very repetetive, with the idea that it builds up to be kind of a cacophony of singing (and hopefully some stomping/clapping) so that it sounds a bit like a bacchanalian ritual slash orgy. The choir video linked to gives you a bit of an idea. There are long stretches where some parts don’t sing. I’m hoping that either the non-singers will join in with the other parts (eg altos with sops, tenors with basses etc), or, better still, a few brave souls will feel moved to clap and or stomp.
