Minutes 4 Feb 2014

Rehearsal Minutes: 4th Feb 2014

Apols: DD

Rehearsal shortened due to tube strike.

True colors : progressing, but needs rejig to address high notes for sops (and tenors).

Show me? : Re: proposal to amend words and melody Bar 29 from ‘show me’ to ‘show’.
I (MM) registered my objection, with details to be circulated – at end of this email.

Man of constant sorrow: a good start, all singing the right notes in the right order, but some were prone to galloping off across old Kentucky, while others were singing the notes in full. We all need to learn the words so we can watch faces, and of course Juliana’s leading, and sing in time. It’ll be a cracker!

Eleanor Rigby. good start.

AOB held items:

Possible need to find new rehearsal venue.
Agm minutes for approval
Oak Barn music choice

Next rehearsal : 18th Feb, chair JL, songs: Sloop John B (sets sail for the first time), Eleanor Rigby, Man of Constant Sorrow.

ps:

Show _me_ your true colours?

I’d like to sustain a strong plea to include ‘me’ in ‘show me’ (Bar 29). It only occurs once, along with the umpteen recitings of “your true colours”, but the author meant it, and put it in the melody as well as the words. To take “show me” out removes an important part of the meaning of the song.
An important message for ‘you with the sad eyes’, is to show the world what their’re made of and show their true character: “You with the sad eyes”, I “cant remember when I last saw you laughing” ie Dont be afraid to let the world what you are really like.

But the song says dont only show the world, show me. “Show me a smile” – (Dont be afraid, be confident!)
As well as a general exhortation, this is a love song, to a person who maybe does not express their feelings, or at least the ones the narrator wants expressed. “let your true colours show me” (show me love), “because I love you”. “call me up, because you know I’ll be there”. The song is an expression of love. “Show me” expresses a gentle yearning for committment, and really should not be omitted.

In the video, both strands occur, with general encouragement being the children and the middle aged couple, and the hunky guy representing the love element.
Finally, the song is not our property to change. The author wrote the word “me” in deliberately, and also shows this in the melody line, which Cyndi Lauper can be heard singing in the video version.

So please can we keep it as written.

love from Matt
