Notes from 5 November 2011 Rehearsal
Attendees: SA, JB, SE, JL, KM, MM, RM, LS, MS, SS, WT, UW
Chair : WT, SE, MM
Iqude – Robin
• Still much too English. Everyone seek out their inner Zulu.
• Robin needed to conduct out front, while singing, as we need his voice.
Summertime – Janette
• Much too shouty (esp tunes). Needs more dynamics.
Do Right – Janette
• Penultimate verse – needs to be quieter and “fed up”.
• Last verse is the angry one.
• Less shouty in the jazzy bit
• Women keep hand movements to the final line.
•
Scarborough Fair – Madrigals
• Too fast. Slow down.
• “rough as shark shit” – apparently (although not bad considering we hadn’t sung it for five months, if you ask me…)
Blackbird – Mercedes
• Count of “one, two, three, four, IN”
• First Blackbird fly needs to be quieter than second
• Everyone to practise “into the light of the dark black sky”
• Listen to Polly’s recording before Tuesday
I Want To Break Free – Sebastian
• Lead sopranos’ “baby” now better – remember it’s short on ba and long on by
• Sebastian has a new suggestion for structure
• Verse 1 more conspiratorial
• Men take more time over their solo bit
•
Lassie Lie Near Me – Juliana
Needs to be more tender and gentle
Women only on unison verse
Come Again – Madrigals
• All parts and timings need brushing up.
• Dare I mention sharks?
Moon River – Simon
• Tops to be in middle (ie move from right hand side)
• Tenor (right), Alto, Tune, Bass (left)
• Simon on side but singing/conducting
• Oohs remember to be quieter
• Don’t emphasise “t” in waiting
• Smooth out the notes – more croony
• Remove all staccato
Parting Glass – Louli
• We need to be more cheerful
• Rhythm needs practise
• Louli has some suggestions re timings for us
